Thursday June 2, 2022 “Somebody to Love” Jefferson Airplane
Jefferson Airplane was the first of the San Francisco psychedelic rock groups of the 1960s to achieve national recognition. The Jefferson Airplane was not a group to court singles but were rather an album oriented group and as proof of that they only had two top twenty hits “White Rabbit” and today’s “Somebody to Love” the rest of their singles barely reached the top forty.
The dynamics of the band were constantly shifting based on who was involved with lead singer Grace Slick resulting with Marty Balin leaving the band and lead guitarist Jorma Kaukona and bassist Jack Cassidy forming ther own group Hot Tuna. The members would get back together at various times through the years but their final performance as the Jefferson Airplane would be in September of 1972 and the next configuration would be Jeffeson Starship, a much more successful singles band.
Jefferson Airpance was the only band to perform at all three 60s major music festivals, Monterey Pop, Woodstock and Altamount.
Couldn’t resist the Dick Clark American Bandstand appearance of Jefferson Airplane. Is there a contradiction there…you bet…is Grace Slick dressed as a somewhat creepy, boot wearing, mini skirted nun…you bet…is bass player Jack Cassady covered with guitar cables...you bet...is Marty Balin on keyboards having the time of his life…nope.
Stay safe and well…and it’s a straightforward question, ‘don’t you want somebody to love’ and I believe the answer is just a simple, ‘yes’.
