Wednesday May 25, 2022 “My Boyfriend’s Back” The Angels
Was going to go with The Angels being the light side of the darker Shangri-Las but these ladies had some attitude as well. Their boyfriend’s back and he knows they weren’t cheating and now you’re gonna get a well deserved beating because he’s kind of big and he’s awful strong.
This tune fits the often used theme for many of the girl groups in the sixties with hand claps, sassy vocals, doo wop styling, slightly campy lyrics and a pleasant upbeat pop melody. It could probably have been recorded just as easily by The Chiffons, The Cookies or The Shirelles, the latter of whom the song was actually written for.
Apparently The Angels were brought in by “My Boyfriend’s Back” songwriters Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer to record a demo of the song to present to The Shirelles but the demo turned out so well they released that version and it would become a number one song.
The Angels had two previous hits with "Till" and "Cry Baby Cry" not the Garnet Mimms song (that's one of my all time favorite rock & roll names) and they would have a couple of additional minor hits through the 60s but would work more often as background session vocalists, a fine example is their work on Lou Christie's "Lightning Strikes".
There’s a fun more recent version of “My Boyfriend’s Back” by the Ravonettes, check it out here.
Stay safe and well…and look out, now that her boyfriend’s back you never know who he might be coming for next.
