Sunday May 15, 2022 “I Just Wanna Get Next to You” Rose Royce

Originally signed as the back-up band for Edwin Starr (“War, what is it good for, absolutely nothing…”) and as a result of that association came into contact with Motown producer Norman Whitfield who brought them in for a variety of sessions to work as the backing band for a number of artists like the Undisputed Truth and the Temptations.

Whitfield got Rose Royce the gig for the soundtrack for the movie Car Wash which included the hit recording of the title track of the movie as well as today’s top ten hit “I Wanna Get Next to You”.

The band would have several additional top ten hits and Norman Whitfield had a pretty amazing career writing songs like “Ain’t too Proud to Beg”, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “I Know I’m Losing You”among many other Motown hits and producing most of the Temptations works.
