Saturday March 20, 2021 “Closing Time” Semisonic
As we bid farewell to our week examining time, what could possibly be more appropriate than Semisonic’s “Closing Time”.
Formed in the early '90s after the breakup of alt-rock outfit Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic was started by band members and Minneapolis natives Dan Wilson and John Munson, who later recruited drummer Jacob Slichter.
Semisonic primary songwriter and lead singer Dan Wilson wrote “Closing Time” when his wife was pregnant with their first child, daughter Coco. Halfway through writing the song, he realized it had a double meaning. "It's all about being born and coming into the world, seeing the bright lights, cutting the cord, opening up into something deeper and more universal,".
Yeah, I am not really hearing that, but then I’m no songwriter. Sounds just like a song to end the musical set you are playing in a bar to me.
Dan Wilson has written hits for Adele, Taylor Swift, the former Dixie Chicks, and Dierks Bentley in addition to his work with Semisonic and recently sold his publishing rights for an undisclosed amount to Primary Wave Music Publishing.
Stay safe and well...and as I may have mentioned back on Sunday, at the beginning of this very timely adventure, rock fills that philosophical void in our lives…”every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end”...yeah!??
