Thursday August 18, 2022 “Cherry Pie” Skip & Flip
No this is not the ever so suggestive “Cherry Pie” that the band Warrant was singing about in 1990 but rather a song from a much more innocent time by two proper young gentlemen Skip & Flip. Wait just a minute though, we had ‘apple pie’, 'pumpkin pie’ earlier this week and they could just as easily have been the title of this song. Peach wouldn’t have worked because it doesn’t have the required two syllables.
Gary Sanford Paxton (Flip) and Clyde Battin (Skip) would record today’s food related song “Cherry Pie” as a follow-up to a minor hit “It Was I” and the food tune would go on to be a million selling top ten hit.
Gary S.Paxton (he demanded the middle initial) would go on to become an eccentric record producer who would work with the Association, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Four Freshmen, and Tommy Roe. And he would produce two highly successful novelty records “Alley Oop” and “Monster Mash”. It has been suggested that Paxton's production abilities were admired by Brian Wilson and feared by the ever so wild Phil Spector.
While “Flip” was busy writing, recording and producing songs “Skip” would go on to play in bands like The Byrds, New Riders of the Purple Sage and Flying Burrito Brothers.
Stay safe and well…and this song could have been ‘apple pie’, ‘lemon pie’ or ‘rhubarb pie’ but it’s ‘cherry pie’ so maybe it's not so innocent.
