Sunday April 17,2022 “Danny’s Song” Kenny Loggins & Jim Messina
Although Anne Murray made it famous in 1973, taking the song to #7 in the US, this is really associated with Kenny Loggins, who wrote the song for his older brother, Dan.
Much of the lyric comes from a letter Dan wrote to Kenny soon after Dan's son, Colin, was born. Dan was planning to marry Colin's mom, Sheila, and was in the process of moving his new family to Berkeley, California. They had no money, but plenty of hopes and dreams.
I do hope that Kenny included his brother in the song's royalties.
Soft rock singer/songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and producer Kenny Loggins had a consistent string of hits in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. He initially teamed up with former Poco band member Jim Messina who was brought in to produce Loggins first solo album. The pair got along so well both personally and musically that they decided to form a duo, Loggins & Messina and went on to have a four-year string of successful albums.
When the duo stopped getting along Kenny Loggins embarked on a successful solo career that included a reign as the king of the movie soundtrack song, scoring Top Ten hits with "I'm Alright" (fCaddyshack), "Footloose" ( Footloose), "Danger Zone" (Top Gun), and "Nobody's Fool" (Caddyshack 2).
Kenny Loggins is the notable singer/songwriter on so many other memorable tunes like “House on Pooh Corner”, “This Is It” (duet with Michael McDonald), “Whenever I Call You Friend” (duet with Stevie Nicks) and “Celebrate Me Home”.
Stay safe and well…and just sit back and enjoy this really lovely song and maybe sing along if the spirit moves you, the lyrics as always are below.
