Wednesday April 13, 2022 “Baby Let’s Wait” The Royal Guardsmen
So yesterday we were “Down in the Boondocks” with Billy Joe Royal and today we have the Royal Guardsmen with “Baby Let’s Wait”. Now you are really starting to appreciate just how foolish this is….
“Baby Let’s Wait” was the first song recorded by the Royal Guardsmen but it unfortunately didn’t hit the charts in a big way for them. However, the song written by Lori Burton and Pam Sawyer was later recorded by the Young Rascals who would have a top twenty hit with it. Burton and Sawyer also wrote “I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore” another top twenty hit for the Rascals.
The Royal Guardsmen were named so that listeners might suspect they were British and give them some of the cache that those UK bands covering the charts at that moment were enjoying. They were close to being British though as they came from neighboring Florida. The band would eventually hit the top ten with “Snoopy vs the Red Baron” which was co-written by Dick Holler who would go on to compose the slightly different “Abraham, Martin & John”.
The “Snoopy '' songs, good news bad news, would pigeon hole the Royal Guardsmen whose successes would be limited to sequels of the adventures of the Red Baron and Snoopy. Not all that bad I guess because, since “Snoopy’s Christmas” is a staple at the holidays, and the Guardsmen probably get a nice residual check in the mail…assuming they had good lawyers.
Stay safe and well…and bet you won’t guess tomorrow's connection.
