Friday July 15, 2022 “Someday Never Comes” Creedence Clearwater Revival

This top twenty song was the last single released by Creedence Clearwater Revival before they broke up in 1972…fifty years ago.

Originally called Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets, maybe too much Bobby Vinton influence then the Golliwogs the band ultimately became Creedence Clearwater Revival.  You know how important this band name stuff is to me, so according to interviews with band members twenty years later, the name's elements came from three sources: Tom Fogerty's friend Creedence Newball, whose name they changed to form the word Creedence; a television commercial for Olympia Brewing Company ("clear water"); and revival in their hopes to resuscitate the band's non-existent career.

Although CCR  performed at the original Woodstock Music and Arts Fair at 3 AM, following the Grateful Dead, they were so unhappy with their performance that they forbade the use of it in the Woodstock motion picture or anything promoting the movie. They didn't want their performance on the album, either.

Bruce Springsteen once said: "Creedence wasn't the hippest band in the world, but they were the best." Springsteen covered many of CCR's songs, including "Fortunate Son", "Bad Moon Rising", "Proud Mary", "Run Through The Jungle", "Who'll Stop the Rain?", and "Travellin' Band."

Here's an interesting tidbit.  Although CCR sold more than fifty million records they never had a number one hit. They did however score five number two hits on the Hot 100, the most of any act without a number one

Stay safe and well…and in a similar fashion to Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle” there’s a valuable lesson in this song.

First thing I remember was asking papa why

For there were many things I didn't know.

And daddy always smiled and took me by the hand

Saying someday you'll understand.

(chorus:)

Well I'm here to tell you now each and every mother's son

That you better learn it fast you better learn it young

'Cause someday never comes.

Well time and tears went by and I collected dust.

For there were many things I didn't know.

When daddy went away, he said, try to be a man,

And someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here...

And then one day in April, I wasn't even there,

For there were many things I didn't know.

A son was born to me. Mama held his hand,

sayin' someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here...

Think it was September, the year I went away,

For there were many things I didn't know.

And still I see him standing tryin' to be a man,

I said, someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,

That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,

'Cause someday never comes.
