Wednesday July 6, 2022 “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie” Jay & the Techniques
More “stuff” today and is there a happier, poppier song that you can think of at this moment as this Jay Proctor and the Techniques song races through your brain. Click on the link below right now and then come back to read this so you can be listening to this wonderfully playful tune immediately (maybe put it on continuous play like I am doing).
Jay and the Techniques were a Philadelphia group and one of the first racially integrated music groups, yeah maybe not a big thing now but back in 1967 it was a big deal. Today’s recording really only featured lead singer Jay Proctor, the Techniques were replaced by studio musicians and background vocals were done by husband and wife Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson.
In addition to being fine vocalists, Ashford and Simpson were amazing songwriters penning hit songs like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "You're All I Need to Get By," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," and "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand) among many others.
“Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie” was first offered to Bobby Hebb (“Sunny”) who passed on it but maybe had some regrets afterward since “Sunny” would be his only hit.
Jay and the Techniques would have a minor hit with their follow-up song “Keep the Ball Rolling” which sounds suspiciously similar to “Apples,Peaches, Pumpkin Pie” but, hey why not imitate the success of their previous top ten song.
Stay safe and well…and I know you will want to be singing this song all day long and now that you have all the lyrics you won’t be limited to just joining in on the chorus “apples, peaches, pumpkin pie”.
