Tuesday May 25, 2021 “Blowin’ in the Wind” Peter, Paul & Mary

Missed Bob Dylan’s 80th birthday yesterday because, well it was just so difficult finding one definitve Dylan tune from his catalog of more than 500 mostly iconic songs. So I thought we might spend a couple of days this week with some of his more famous songs.

“Blowin in the Wind” was recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary just three weeks after Dylan recorded it. They shared the same manager, Albert Grossman, who brought the song to Peter, Paul & Mary and it was really the beginning of the Dylan legacy, as it introduced his music to a broad audience.  “Blowin in the Wind” was a top ten hit for Peter, Paul & Mary and is Dylan’s most covered song with more than 375 versions by artists as diverse as Sam Cooke and Marlene Deitrich.

Dylan has won many awards throughout his career including the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, ten Grammy Awards, one Academy Award and one Golden Globe Award. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has more than 52 albums recorded, not including side projects like the Traveling Wilburys.

Stay safe and well...and think about this, Dylan (as Elston Gunn), very early in his career played keyboards in pop star Bobby Vee’s band (“Take Good Care of My Baby”, “Rubber Ball”, etc.).  and he remained friends with Vee and an admirer of his work until Vee passed away in 2016.

How many roads must a man walk down

Before you can call him a man?

How many seas must the white dove sail

Before she sleeps in the sand?

How many times must the cannonballs fly

Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind

The answer is blowing in the wind

How many years can a mountain exist

Before it's washed to the sea?

How many years can some people exist

Before they're allowed to be free?

How many times can a man turn his head

And pretend that he just doesn't see?

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind

The answer is blowing in the wind

How many times must a man look up

Before he can see the sky?

How many ears must one man have

Before he can hear people cry?

How many deaths will it take 'til he knows

That too many people have died?

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind

The answer is blowing in the wind
