Sunday January 30, 2022 “Something About You” Level 42
This is one of those 80s songs that those of us who were listening to the radio or watching MtV at that moment in time will immediately recognize but when pressed will have absolutely no idea who sang it…now you know. The band is Level 42 who took their name from The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy in which ‘42’ is the answer to a question about the meaning of life.
Level 42 was originally put together as a jazz/funk band so pop oriented songs like “Something About You” were well outside their comfort zone and below their expertise level, but they were massaged into releasing this tune. It was written by the band BTW, and it became a top ten international hit. Once again what do artists know about commercially successful work?
In the video, bassist Mark King appears as a dark clown magician, representing the negative aspects in the relationships of Level 42 band members Mike Lindup, Phil and Boon Gould with their girlfriends, all played by the same actress, Cherie Lunghi. King, originally a drummer, had an unusual style of slap bass playing and as a result his thumb was insured by Polydor, his record label, for three million dollars.
Stay safe and well…and “making mistakes is a part of life's imperfection.”
