Tuesday January 25, 2022 “Let It Grow” Eric Clapton
The class of 2000 would be Eric Clapton’s third go round in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as he had previously been inducted with the band The Yardbirds and then with the band Cream.
“Let It Grow” was written by Clapton and is included on his 461 Ocean Boulevard album which is the address of the house that he lived at with the band while they were recording the album. Background vocals on this song are done by Yvonne Elliman who had previously played Mary Magdelene in the movie Jesus Christ Superstar and would go on to have a hit of her own “If I Can’t Have You” written by the Bee Gees and included on the Saturday Nighrt Fever soundtrack.
Guitar greats Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix were good friends, but not immediately. Chas Chandler, bass player from The Animals and Hendrix’ manager arranged for Jimi to sit in with Clapton’s band Cream and when Hendrix played a solo that Clapton himself had not been able to master yet Eric left the stage. And when Chandler found him backstage Clapton remarked “You didn’t tell me he was so f$cking good!”
I recently saw a video that featured a group of guitarists who were asked who the better guitarist was Hendrix or Clapton and without even taking a breath to a man they said Hendrix. So if ‘Clapton is god’ what would that make Hendrix?
And it is good to be a guitar god particularly if you like fast cars, as does Clapton who collects Ferraris and had a custom Ferrari built for himself, the SP12EC to the tune of $4.7MM.
Stay safe and well…and you really can’t argue with Clapton’s message here, ‘plant your love and let it grow.’
