Thursday February 4, 2021 “Do Anything You Wanna Do” Eddie & the Hot Rods

This British band was on the leading edge of punk rock and were rivals of the band the Sex Pistols so much so that the manly Johnny Rotten challenged Hot Rods front man Barrie Masters to a fight to establish his superiority. That is until he discovered that Masters was a school boxing champ and the challenge was quickly rethought.

“I just went to give him (Johnny Rotten) a slap and he ran away, that was it. He was just a little boy,” Masters recalls.

Punk or not, this is straight ahead, high energy rock & roll meant to be enjoyed loud and live and since only one of those is a current choice, turn it up to eleven, why, because ‘it goes to eleven’.

There are more than twenty musicians that have wandered through this group and not one of them has the first name of Eddie.  So who is Eddie?

‘Eddie’ was a mannequin that the band used to bring along with them as a spoof but they stopped bringing  him along because ‘Eddie’ was getting all the girls. Members of this group would go on to be involved with Elvis Costello, The Damned and Stiff Little Fingers, but not ‘Eddie’.

Stay safe and well...and take “Eddie’s” (no relation) advice and do absolutely anything you want to do, as long as it’s legal and if it’s not, well just don’t get caught.

Gonna break out of the city

Leave the people here behind

Searching for adventure

It's the type of life to find

Tired of doing day jobs

With no thanks for what I do

I'm sure I must be someone

Now I'm gonna find out who

Why don't you ask them what they expect from you?

Why don't you tell them what you are gonna do?

You'll get so lonely, maybe it's better that way

It ain't you only, you got something to say

Do anything you wanna do

Do anything you wanna do

Don't need no politicians to tell me things I shouldn't be

Neither no opticians to tell me what I oughta see

No one tells you nothing even when you know they know

But they tell you what you should do

They don't like to see you grow

Why don't you ask them what they expect from you?

Why don't you tell them what you are gonna do?

You'll get so lonely, maybe it's better that way

It ain't you only, you got something to say

Do anything you wanna do

Do anything you wanna do

Gonna break out of the city

Leave the people here behind

Searching for adventure

It's the type of life to find

Tired of doing day jobs

With no thanks for what I do

I'm sure I must be someone

Now I'm gonna find out who

Why don't you ask them what they expect from you?

Why don't you tell them what you're gonna do?

You'll get so lonely, maybe it's better that way

It'ain't you only, you got something to say

Do anything you wanna do

Do anything you wanna do
