Wednesday April 6, 2022 “Rhythm of the Rain” The Cascades
If I was going to put together a list of my favorite songs, “Rythym of the Rain” would be near the top…at least it would be near the top today, since those favorite song lists are like Hemmingway’s Moveable Feast, they’re different everyday. Still this is just such a fun song.
A one hit wonder vocal group from San Diego, the Cascades sang this light, pop-oriented, top ten hit “Rythym of the Rain” in 1963, which was written by guitarist and lead singer John Gummoe while he was serving on a ship in the navy.
Remember when we talked about the California studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew. Well they were all used on today’s song with the vocals handled by the Cascades, Some of the players on “Rythym of the Rain” included Glen Campbell and drummer Hal Blaine among others.
Although this is the only hit the Cascades had it has been a popular tune for many other artists who have covered it including Bobby Darin, Dan Fogelberg, Jan & Dean, Neil Sedaka and Jerry Jeff Walker. A huge worldwide hit, BMI named "Rhythm of the Rain" the ninth most performed song of the 20th century.
And although it may seem critical to suggest that a band or an artist is a one hit wonder, how many thousands of bands and artists are never lucky enough to even achieve that status.
Stay safe and well…and here's another video that someone, SVansay, has done a really nice job putting together. Nice enough that we will forgive the misspelling on 'pitter, pater'.
