Thursday October 21, 2021 “The Green Manilishi” Fleetwood Mac

We’re doubling up on the rainbow color of green with today’s song, “The Green Manalishi” which was written by Peter Green.  Coincidence, maybe not.

You may only know the almost current lineup of Fleetwood Mac consisting of Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood which is actually the 10th lineup of the band but we’re going back to one of the very earliest versions.

This is the Peter Green version of Fleetwood Mac well before the Buckingham/Nicks version and definitely a lot more off center than the latter and perhaps more interesting musically. And “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged Crown)” which Peter Green wrote, sings and plays lead guitar on which certainly supports that ‘more interesting’ theory.

You may not know this song but there is some darned fun guitar work going on here, and what is a ‘green manilishi’...exactly.

Peter Green, who in June 1996 was voted the third-best guitarist of all time in Mojo magazine and in 2015 was ranked at number 58 on Rolling Stone’s list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", also wrote “Black Magic Woman” which was originally recorded by Fleetwood Mac and then covered by Santana, who had a huge hit with it.

Stay safe and well...and here’s a scary fact, nearly one in six US households own a copy of Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album Rumours which has sold nearly forty million copies to date.

Now, when the day goes to sleep

And the full moon looks

The night is so black that the darkness cooks

Don't you come creepin' around

Makin' me do things I don't wanna do

Can't believe that you need my love so bad

Come sneakin' around tryin' to drive me mad

Bustin' in on my dreams

Makin' me see things I don't wanna see

'Cause you're da Green Manalishi with the two prong crown

All my tryin' is up, all your bringin' is down

Just takin' my love then slippin' away

Leavin' me here just tryin' to keep from followin' you
