Saturday September 25, 2021 “Respect” Aretha Franklin
And now the new number one song on the Rolling Stone 500 Best Songs Ever list.
Written and originally recorded by Otis Redding but when he heard Aretha’s version of “Respect” he was so impressed that he said “It’s her song now, she owns it.” And according to the RS 500 Best Songs, Aretha’s “Respect” is the best of the best.
Aretha Franklin's interpretation and unapologetic demand for respect became an anthem for the feminist movement in the 1970s. It has often been considered one of the best R&B songs of its era, earning Franklin two Grammy Awards in 1968 for "Best Rhythm & Blues Recording" and "Best Rhythm & Blues Solo Vocal Performance", and being inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2002, the Library of Congress honored Franklin's version by adding it to the National Recording Registry.
Aretha said the song’s popularity is based on the fact that it is something everyone desires “Respect” but we know better. She may be right about everyone’s desire for respect but it is the Queen of Soul’s deliverance that shows us how to get that respect...r-e-s-p-e-c-t spells out what it means to me.
