Saturday May 15, 2021 “Save Tonight” Eagle-Eye Cherry
Eagle-Eye, real name. Wonder what his parents, siblings and friends called him growing up, they probably used his middle name, Lanoo. Eagle-Eye is the step-brother of jazz singer Nene Cherry and the son of trumpeter Don Cherry who played with many jazz legends like John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Gato Barbieri to name a few of the more notable artists.
Born in Stockholm he was sent to New York and enrolled in the High School of Performing Arts to become an actor. He was in the same class as Jennifer Aniston and Chaz Bono, who I believe would have been Chastity Bono then. Eagle-Eye had a minor role on The Cosby Show and starred in the short-lived 1993 TV series South Beach.
Giving up on acting he decided to tap into his dad's musical genes and learned to play guitar and keyboards and began to write. He crafted “Save Tonight” based on the many times his dad would spend time with his son the night before he would have to go on the road leaving family behind...and I bet you thought it was so romantic.
And not to take anything away from Eagle-Eye’s composition but the entire song is the same four chords repeating (Am, F, C, G) so it’s fun to play and as we have discussed a song doesn’t need to be complex to be good. Heck, Neil Diamond created an entire catalog of iconic songs with only three chords.
Eagle Eye had an international top ten with “Save Tonight” and would sell more than four million copies of the album/CD that contained the single.
Stay safe and well...and here’s a clever video that gives the appearance that it was done in one continuous shot.
