Tuesday July 13, 2021 “Do You Love Me” Contours/Guster

“You broke my heart ‘cause I couldn’t dance…”

This song was written by Motown founder Berry Gordy, who wrote it for The Temptations, but they failed to arrive for the recording session. At the same time but in a different Motown studio, The Contours arrived to record "It Must Be Love," but Gordy had a different idea - he asked them to cut "Do You Love Me" instead. The song became one of Motown's first hits.

The Contours, who to a man hated the song, took their version of “Do You Love Me” to a number one song in 1962 and then a top ten hit twenty-six years later when it was featured in the movie “Dirty Dancing”

As for Guster’s version of “Do You Love Me” there’s no dancing and it couldn’t be more different from what the Contours offered us.  Guster was formed by three freshmen who met at Tufts University and as a result of relentless touring built a following that enjoyed their literate and hooky music.

Like the Grateful Dead, Guster allows their fans to record their shows which apparently has not harmed the bands successes but rather provided a strong fan relationship that has enhanced their popularity.

Stay safe and well...and now that you can dance, do you feel it, do you feel it now?

The Contours

You broke my heart 'cause I couldn't dance,

You didn't even want me around

And now I'm back to let you know I can really shake 'em down

Do you love me? (I can really move)

Do you love me? (I'm in the groove)

Now do you love me?

(Do you love me now that I can dance?)

Watch me, now

(Work, work) ah, work it out baby

(Work, work) well, I'm gonna drive you crazy

(Work, work) ah, just a little bit of soul, now?

(Work)

Now I can mash potatoes (I can mash potatoes)

I can do the twist (I can do the twist)

Tell me, baby, do you like it like this?

Tell me (tell me) tell me

 Do you love me?

Do you love me, baby?

Now do you love me?

(Do you love me now that I can dance?)

Watch me, now

(Work, work) ah, work it out baby

(Work, work) well, I'm gonna drive you crazy

(Work, work) you are getting kind of cold, now

(Work)

(Work, work) with just a little bit of soul, now ?

(Work, work) come on, come on now

(Work, work) I'm gonna drive you crazy

(Work)

I can mash potatoes

I can do the twist

Well now, tell me, baby, do you like it like this?

Tell me (tell me) tell me

 Do you love me?

Do you love me, baby?

Do you love me?

Do you love me?

Now that I can dance

(Work, work) ah, work it out baby

(Work, work) well, I'm gonna drive you crazy

(Work, work) oh you are getting kind of cold, now

(Work)

(Work, work) with just a little bit of soul, now

(Work, work) now don't you get kinda bold, now?

(Work, work) oh, work it out, baby

Guster

We were young, twenty one, all those years ago

In came a fascination, everything is under control

Full of life, untried, through thickets and through thorns

Out came a revelation, everything is out of control

 Do you feel it?

Do you feel it now?

Want it, but you don't know how?

Have it, as much as anybody ever has?

I wanna wake you from your dream,

I wanna know just who you're talking to when your singin' in your sleep

I wanna find out what it means

Do you love me?

I got marbles in my mouth

Thousand words I wanna say but it's impossible to spit em out

I can barely make a sound

Do you love me?

Now we're fine, all right, but all those days are gone

We read our constellations, everything is under control

Are you tired, I'm tired

The tv sparks and glows

The news man gives information, everything is under control

 Do you feel it?

Do you feel it now?

Want it, but you don't know how?

Have it, as much as anybody ever has?

I wanna wake you from your dream,

I wanna know just who you're talking to when your singin' in your sleep

I wanna find out what it means

Do you love me?

I got marbles in my mouth

Thousand words I wanna say but it's impossible to spit em out

I can barely make a sound

Do you love me?

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do

 Do you feel it?

Do you feel it now?

Want it, but you don't know how?

Have it, as much as anybody ever has?

I'm the king and you're the queen

Maybe I'm not the one that you're singin' to in your sleep

I wanna find out what it means

Do you love me, love me?

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do
